We’ve only just got over The Brits and it’s nearly time for the Eurovision Song Contest, the crazy show where weird bands and groups no one has heard of from all over Europe compete to see who is the best worst singer !!!
Actually not all the bands are unheard of – in 1974 the contest was won by a group called ABBA and Cliff Richard once represented the UK.
The last time we won was in 1997 when Katrina and The Waves sang Love Shine A Light. But they weren’t a new group either – Katrina and The Waves had hits in the 1980’s – their biggest hit being Walking on Sunshine.
This year Ireland are represented by Jedward !!!!!! for the second time !!!!!!
If that’s not shocking enough, last year, the UK act was Blue, a famous boy band from the 90’s, but this year the UK is being represented by none other than Englebert Humperdinck !!!!!
Englebert Humperdinck (his real name is Arnold Dorsey) has sold 145 million records, but he wasn’t a big star when my mum and day were young; he was a massive star when my nan and granddad were growing up !!!! His first big hit was Please Release me in 1967 !!!!
Have a look at Englebert Humperdinck singing Please release me on TV in 1969:
